I'm not entirely sure I would consider DVD part of any 'standard' in a game console. A device trying to be an all-in-one for whatever reasons would do quite well with a DVD playback feature, but a device to play video games has no real need to also play movies. Unless you are playing something like Metal Gear Solid, the two are completely separate paradigms - one a directed narrative, and one where the user(s) direct the narrative.

Not trying to nitpick or attack you or anything, just trying to say that getting DVD playback is a wonderful additive feature, but it's icing on the cake, not what you are really paying money for when you purchase a game console. If you want perfect playback of DVDs, get a dedicated DVD player. That being said, I would have loved the US getting a DVD-enabled Wii too. I enjoyed the PS2's playback for the most part and am highly considering enabling this on my Wii after I look more into whether or not it can work on an up-to-date system and more feedback on how well playback actually is. Actually, the reason why the wii does not work as a dvd player is the same reason the gamecube wasn't a dvd player (at least in north america, I hear that there was a version in other regions built with philips that could play dvds) is because to be able to play DVDs, you need to pay royalties to the copyright holder of DVD. This is why you see the little DVD logo on most DVD drives/players.
To cut costs and keep the system cheap, Nintendo decided to not put DVD playback into the wii. If the instructions really are already built in I would not be surprised if they made the user pay for the royalty fee in the form of a new channel at some point.

Hi, I've had a Wii with Homebrew channel for a while. Lots of Retro games and Wii games on an External HDD.
I'm looking into Homebrew my first Wii U. I have the instructions and it looks easy. I would like to check here for the newest way to install Homebrew Browser and App Store.
Also, can I play GC/Wii games from a USB? What about videos? I never got videos working on my Wii with WiiMC and MPlayer. I would like to try on the Wii U.
(It's 1080p?) Can I get a quick list of what emulators are available? From the App store?
